The Sixth Sense

I'm not sure if there will be an assignment about writing about "The Sixth Sense," but either way, I would like to write about how I felt about the movie and how I thought about my life.

"The Sixth Sense." It gives the original 'old movie vibes.' Made in 1999, it is still one of the most famous classics of all time. And it has its reasons. The plot, the message, the overall atmosphere of the movie surely had me hooked. Well, to be honest, I hate horror, and horror combined with 'old movie vibes' had me in a position in which I could cover my eyes in less than a second just in case. The movie, although it was horror, was a different kind of horror, which is one reason I believe the movie went viral. Yes there are spooky and startling scenes in the movie, the background music making it tens times worse, but it was definitely different with ordinary horror. No ghosts just running around killing people, no zombies or some sort trying to strangle others, just dead people. Ghosts for sure, but with rationality. A horror movie for sure, but with more weight on family, meaning rather than horror itself.

Dr. Crowe, acted by Bruce Willis, was played out in the story terrifically in my opinion. Dr. Crowe before being shot by Vincent, and after being shot is not that different in overall 'mood.' Dr. Crowe, although the same patient man before and after the gunshot, gives off an arrogant aura before meeting Vincent. After the gunshot, how Dr. Crowe acts does not strike me as arrogant. Rather more experienced, someone who has experienced a downfall.

Dr. Crowe also made me think about the job, psychology adviser. To be honest, I do think that no one in the world will think about wanting to become a psychology adviser after watching the movie. "The Sixth Sense" still did remind me of the job; as a listener, I had considered becoming a psychology adviser (심리 상담사), but hadn't given it much thought. I do admit after watching the movie, a psychology adviser seemed 'cool,' but I doubt that if that makes me want to become one.

The movie was fairly more touching than most horror films. The last scene when Dr. Crowe told his wife she was never second, showed that this movie was more than just a psychology horror movie. The relationship between Cole and his mother also gives meaning to the 'family' theme. The scene when Cole's mother cries out in her sleep that she won't let anyone hurt Cole shows the strong bond between mother and son that no one can break.

Overall, the movie is surely a movie that has value in watching. Not too short, not too long, and a nice twist at the end. Full of meaning and some 'horror' parts to keep you keen. I have only heard of the title until now, I am glad I have finally watched "The Sixth Sense."

  1. Glad one student wrote about this. It seems strange to me that my students are now young enough not to know this movie at least a little. That means I'm getting old. It's a very unique movie in that it doesn't really fulfill any single genre and yet succeeds in combining so many of them in satisfying ways. Very touching relationships among the case no matter who they are. Glad you liked it.
